  • What is ZOMIG?
    ZOMIG belongs to a class of medications called triptans. ZOMIG was specifically developed for the treatment of migraine headache pain in adults and comes in a choice of 3 forms. ZOMIG should not be used to prevent or reduce the number of migraine attacks you experience. You can only get ZOMIG by prescription from your doctor.
    ZOMIG is not for the prevention of migraines. ZOMIG is not for other types of headaches.


  • How does ZOMIG work?
    How ZOMIG works is not completely understood. But based on scientific studies, it appears ZOMIG may reduce swelling of blood vessels surrounding your brain that may cause migraine headache pain. ZOMIG also blocks the release of substances from nerve endings that may cause additional pain and other migraine symptoms, such as nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

  • How should I take ZOMIG?
    Take ZOMIG exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
    ZOMIG Tablets: swallow whole with liquids.
    ZOMIG-ZMT Orally Disintegrating Tablets: place on your tongue where the tablet will dissolve and be swallowed with saliva.
    ZOMIG Nasal Spray: the usual dose is a single spray in 1 nostril.

  • How often can I take ZOMIG?
    Take ZOMIG exactly as prescribed by your doctor. ZOMIG should not be taken every day. It should be taken only to treat an actual migraine headache. In a 30-day period, do not treat more than 3 headaches with ZOMIG Tablets or ZOMIG-ZMT Orally Disintegrating Tablets, or 4 headaches with ZOMIG Nasal Spray, because the safety of doing so is unknown.

    The most common side effects reported by patients in clinical trials for ZOMIG Tablets and ZOMIG-ZMT Orally Disintegrating Tablets include dizziness; tightness, pressure, or pain sensation (such as in the throat, neck, or chest); fatigue; tingling; drowsiness; and nausea.     The most common side effects reported by patients in clinical trials for ZOMIG Nasal Spray include unusual taste; dry mouth; tingling sensation; skin sensitivity (especially around the nose); pain, pressure, and tightness sensations (such as in the nose, throat, or chest); drowsiness; weakness; dizziness; and nausea.   • How should ZOMIG be stored?
    Store your medication away from light and moisture, and at a controlled room temperature. If your medication has expired (the expiration date is printed on the treatment pack), throw it away as instructed. If your doctor decides to stop your treatment, do not keep any leftover medicine unless your doctor tells you to. Throw away your medicine as instructed. Keep your medicine in a safe place where children cannot reach it. It may be harmful to children. Be sure that discarded medicine are out of the reach of children.



  • How long has ZOMIG been available?
    ZOMIG Tablets were introduced in 1997 and have been helping to provide migraine headache pain relief to patients for over 10 years. ZOMIG-ZMT Orally Disintegrating Tablets became available in 2001 and ZOMIG Nasal Spray in 2003.


  • Is ZOMIG safe to take while pregnant?
    Do not use ZOMIG if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, are trying to become pregnant, or are not using adequate contraception, unless you have discussed this with your doctor. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women; therefore, ZOMIG should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Approved Use for ZOMIG

ZOMIG is a prescription medication used for the treatment of migraine headaches in adults. ZOMIG is not for the prevention of migraines. ZOMIG is not for other types of headaches.

Important Safety Information

  • Do not take ZOMIG if your headache is not a migraine
  • Do not take ZOMIG if your headache is hemiplegic or basilar migraine (If you are unsure about this, ask your doctor)
  • Do not take ZOMIG if you have heart disease, history of, or risk factors for heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, circulation (blood flow) problems, or have had a stroke. Only your doctor can determine if ZOMIG is right for you
  • ZOMIG should not be used within 24 hours of another 5-HT1 agonist (triptans), ergotamine-containing or ergot-type medication (for headache), or within 2 weeks of an MAO-A inhibitor (for depression)
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding because ZOMIG may not be right for you
  • ZOMIG, like other triptans, may be associated with a potentially life-threatening condition called serotonin syndrome, mainly when taken together with certain antidepressants. Inform your doctor of all your medications prior to taking ZOMIG
  • Phenylketonurics: ZOMIG-ZMT® (zolmitriptan) Orally Disintegrating Tablets contain phenylalanine, a component of aspartame
  • Safety and effectiveness of ZOMIG in pediatric patients have not been established
  • Side Effects: The most common side effects reported by patients in clinical trials with ZOMIG Nasal Spray include unusual taste, tingling sensation, skin sensitivity, and dizziness
  • Side Effects: The most common side effects reported by patients in clinical trials with ZOMIG Tablets and ZOMIG-ZMT include dizziness; tightness, pressure, pain in the neck, throat, or jaw; fatigue; tingling; drowsiness; and nausea
